One of the most beautifully understated movies ever to come out of the UK, Fred Zinnemann's monumental direction of Robert Bolt's original screenplay boasted a cast of real breadth and depth, with the truly outstanding Paul Scofield at its head giving a beautifully understated performance as Thomas More, who stood up to King Henry VIII when the King rejected the Roman Catholic Church to obtain a divorce and remarriage.
The film won 6 Oscars, with Best actor for Scofield - surely the most deserved of any - among them. It's a quietly powerful morality story of principal over political expedience that the modern generations of political animal would do well to take notice of.
If you haven't seen this film yet, you really have missed a treat.
